Making Edible Cupcake Toppers
Growing up, I loved to watch Food Network! I think watching so many cooking and baking shows (Cupcake Wars!) is what got me so interested in baking in the first place!
I will forever attribute my dedication to making edible toppers to the show Cutthroat Kitchen. I’ll never forget when Alton Brown eliminated someone for putting something on their dish that wasn’t edible! He told them that anything being served to people should be 100% edible, and that has stuck with me ever since. Fast forward 8 plus years to when I started Tiny Bird Bakeshop, and it became one of my standards to never use something on a cupcake that was inedible. While it has required some creativity in many custom order situations, I have always loved the way things turn out when I make toppers out of fondant, chocolate, or other similar methods.
How Do You Make Edible Toppers?

There are two essential things when it comes to making edible cupcake toppers, like the ones pictured above: good fondant and the right tools go a long way. These Captain America shields were SO fun to make! (Especially since Captain America is my celebrity crush!😉)
What Is The Best Fondant To Use?
The right fondant will make or break you! Be sure whatever brand you are using is fresh, because if it is too dry, you won’t be able to work with the fondant. I love the Satin Ice brand, and have been using it for years. It is easy to find, whether you order it on Amazon or pick it up at your local Michaels. They have so many color options, and they last for a long time before drying out! It comes in nice tubs wrapped in a bag to help keep it fresh, which is so helpful! I always have white on hand, because I can dye it to any custom color shade I need.
These basketball cupcake toppers are SO easy to make! All you need is a round cookie cutter, some orange fondant, and an edible ink marker! I love using edible in markers. They make it so easy to draw on fondant! I just cut out the circles, and once they dried out I drew on the basketball lines! So cute and SO easy! Perfect for a basketball themed party!
The BEST Fondant Cutter Brand
I love to get my fondant cutters from this shop! JB Cookie Cutters has been a favorite of mine for years. They have so many options, their shipping is super fast, and they have fantastic customer service! I also love how they offer multiple sizes in almost all of their cutters.
